Álex Maroño Porto is The Week’s fact-checker and a freelance writer based in New York. His words have appeared in El País, West Side Rag, Columbia News Service or Medium.

He graduated from the Columbia Journalism School, where he studied with a Fulbright Scholarship, with Honors in Reporting, Video and Journalism of Ideas.

He also graduated from the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, Madrid, with a Bachelor in International Relations and from the Universidad Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona, with a Master in Current Democracies: Nationalism, Federalism and Multiculturalism.

From 2017 to 2021, he worked at El Orden Mundial, a Spanish online magazine, where he wrote about socio-cultural topics such as LGBTQ affairs and cultural criticism, as well as U.S. and international topics.

He also worked as a Research Assistant for Javier Solana , former Secretary General of NATO, at the Esade Center for Global Economy and Geopolitics (EsadeGeo,) and he interned at the World Health Organization Barcelona Office for Health Systems Financing and the Spanish Representation to the OECD .
